Emergencies in Ophthalmology
The ophthalmologist may be called to manage a cardiac arrest, choking or aspiration.Anterior segment issues could range from conjunctivitis, foreign bodies, blunt/penetrating injury, chemical burns, corneal ulcers. Includes a comprehensive overview of acute glaucoma.Trauma and infections contribute to the large majority of orbital emergencies,along with infections,orbital fractures and infestations of the orbit. Ominous neuro-ophthalmic signs like pupil involvement, subtle signs for multiple cranial nerve involvement, a saccadic defoveation movement requiring immediate imaging are discussed. Conditions like opsoclonus, traumatic cranial nerve involvement may require special investigations. The pediatric population presents a unique challenge like white reflex, a sudden strabismus, funny eye movements that could guide you to the diagnosis. Also covered are the preliminary management of endophthalmitis and few posterior segment infections are also elaborated by photos and videos. .
The chief instructor has received her ophthalmology and fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology from a premier institute in India.She has a teaching experience in the specialty for 15 years. Currently she is heading the dept of Pediatric ophthalmology and Neuro-ophthalmology at her hospital She has delivered many IC'S including nystagmus and pediatric ophthalmology and glaucoma @ AIOS and other regional/sub-specialty conferences and has a number of publications in national and international peer reviewed journals.
